Hi, I am Kay. I am owner, creator, designer, business manager, marketer, everything. I started Moondance Artwork in 1992 as a fine artist. In 2010, I decided to use the copper scraps from my artwork to make jewelry. In 2018, my husband retired and joined my business. He does a lot of the prep work like sanding and cutting. He also loves doing art shows with me.
Tell us about Moondance Artwork values.
I love using recycled materials. Scavenging the recycled bins to find exciting pieces that I can recreate into fun, one-of-a-kind jewelry for my customers. I want each customer to know that they are buying a individual piece of jewelry.
What is your favorite Moondance Artwork product and why?
The cuffs! I love creating my variety of patinas and I feel that you can really see the variation in the cuffs.
Where are your products made?
We work out of our house in Montana. I have a shop in my garage where I use large metal shears to cut and bend the copper. I use my darkroom to patina & darken the copper. And we have a studio with a great view of the Missoula valley where we create each piece.
Tell us something you've learned in your sustainable fashion journey that was a surprise to you.
Every time I go out looking for material to recycle I am always surprised at how much is out there. From copper to zinc to wood and other various metals. I also use recycled wire and beads. Lots of friends give me items they are no longer using. I am not a hoarder, but I have so many cool items that it's almost overwhelming.
Where is your favorite place to be and why?
My favorite place to be in on a mountain-side breathing in the fresh air and viewing the amazing scenery. My next favorite place is in my hot tub, followed closely by the farm I grew up on in Illinois.
