A true artist can visualize something beautiful out of anything! We are in awe of the jewelry that can be made from recycling. You might be thinking we are crazy, but just wait until you see how these five U.S. artisans are turning waste into art you can wear! 1. Hathorway has been a top seller in our boutique from day one. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, every piece is designed by designer, Jessica Phan, who wanted to reconnect with her Vietnamese heritage by preserving a 400-year-old craftsmanship which uses ethically-sourced buffalo horns, a material—like leather—that has been...
The other day, two ladies were browsing our sale rack just outside the store. I was inside and heard them commenting on how cute the clothes were. When they got to the end of the rack, one of them said, “$99 are you F#@$’ing kidding me?” They were looking at an ethically made dress from our partner in Portugal (BTW, it’s on sale at 40% off of $99 in the store). I wanted to run outside and explain to her why our boutique may seem expensive compared to shopping at fast fashion retail stores. They didn’t bother to come into the shop, and I was left realizing what a long way we have to go as a society in understanding and recognizing what fair labor practices are in the garment industry. Afterall, education is a key piece to our vision and trust me, we are still learning too!
I used to think I needed a ton of clothes to always have something to wear. But, what I found is that the more I had, the harder it was to get dressed and lots of the stuff in my closet I liked, but I didn’t love. I would take forever to pick something out and then I wouldn't like it once I tried it on. That is when I realized, I would rather have fewer, but nicer things that I LOVED to wear.
The trick is having versatile pieces and accessorizing! Your imagination is your friend when you can see everything you have to choose from. You can visualize how to pair items in different ways and you don’t have to try things on to see if you like them because you LOVE everything you have in your closet! So, if you ask me, here are the 7 staples I think should be in every closet.
Let’s face it - these days we have very little control over things that we never even considered a big deal. I can’t hop on a plane and head anywhere I choose, I can’t leave my door without a mask and I still find many empty shelves in the stores. I like to feel like I have more control and it gives me a sense of normalcy. Sure, sometimes it's nice to not have to be the one making all the decisions and sometimes I would rather just go along for the ride, but there is a balance...at least for me. In my opinion during this time, the one thing you do have control over is... you. The opportunities are endless - if you set your mind to it and take control!
We’ve been asked several times, during formal interviews and casually, where did the name “Ginger Threads”, come from? As anyone knows who’s started a business, you can spin your wheels for A.Long.Time. trying to devise something that captures EVERYTHING your company is about! When Bridget, out of the blue, said, “What about Ginger Threads?” I immediately had chicken skin (goosebumps), and said, “I love that - Ginger was my Mom’s name.”
